. u.s. automakers are setting a new pace to deal with a slowdown in europe. ford and gm reported better-than-expected profits this week as north american sales helped boost revenue while european demand dropped. gm is looking to save $500 million in the next couple years as it restructures in that region. the automaker says it has cut 2,300 jobs in europe and wants to cut 300 more. ford is also restructuring by eliminating 5,700 workers in the uk and europe. "europe has been on the brink for awhile now. but it doesn't seem to be really impacting u.s. sales and north america remains a very profitable wing for most of these automakers worldwide. so europe is slumping and slowly but surely automakers are starting to remove capacity from that region and that should help them deal with it in the long run." that was kelsey may of cars.com. ford and gm both expect to lose money in the eurozone. ford sees losses topping $1 billion. gm says it could lose as much as $1.8 billion. 18.5 million. that's the number of europeans who are currently unemployed. the region's jobless rate hit an all-time h

2009. no one had any idea what was happening. all of us in the auto industry were looking at gm and chrysler. we sought to companies on the verge offailure that were going to take down the entire supplier industry. we also saw an industry that had to be restructured. bill ford is my hero. he fired in self. they put forward in a good place, so they did not have to be rescued. they laid out a map for what had to be done, and everybody had to sacrifice. neil: and the end justifies it because things are back. and is starting with president bush. i'm not criticizing, but it did not lead to a slippery slope. >> once again, the difference between this was, this was not a bailout. a bailout is when you give money to the existing guys. restructuring. the key thing that obama did -- neil: the, the bankruptcy and restructuring. >> but the restructuring was driven by the president's team. a bankruptcy court would never have done that by itself, and it is the reason i don't like the mitt romney passive approach, just turn over to the courts. it would not have moved fast enough. it would not have

of gm. you know delco batteries. we had gm that desperate to cut off its own parts and set off delphi as a separate company which immediately pretty quickly went bankrupt. well, down went the vulture's and they pick.delphi corp. out of bankruptcy court for 67 cents, a darned good deal for the entire auto parts division of general motors. 67 cents a share. within two years they flipped it. they went public at $22 a share. share. that is it 3200% prophet that they weren't done. they weren't done. delphi had 29 plans in the u.s. and the delphi group sold it back to gm and the rest, every single plant was sold, was sent off to china. every single uaw job, everyone, 25,200 uaw workers including -- i got a call from michael moore. his dad had the delphi plant and flint michigan. every job sent to china, every one. now that was not the plan. obama's administration came up with the deal with the owner of detroit to take over the delphi unit and basically give it back to general motors. gm, the pistons and the u.s. government would buy back delco auto parts and give it back to general m

into the fact check, gm, which had been saved of course by the auto bailout. a gm spokesman telling the press, "we've clearly entered some parallel universe." also from gm, "at this stage we're looking at hubble telescope-like distances between campaign ads and reality." but here's the thing. it is one thing to lie about your record or even your opponent's record. but what mr. romney has done here is to lie about a third party. in that third party's back yard. and you can tell that mr. romney's ohio lie about jeep is not going to work in ohio in part because ohio voters follow the car industry like it's the local football team. the romney campaign's running these ads in youngstown, for example. take a look at the "youngstown vindicator." the kind of reporting they were doing back in july on a local plant. "i think part of this relates to our focus on quality and make sure parts are right so we don't pass problems further up the line," said somebody's cousin. here's the youngstown paper in august on a plant expanding. fact, jobs will be sentd to china, this is proven not to be true. you have gm and chrysler, their chief furious over this line of attack centered around the auto industry. i want to play what the president said today regarding the auto ads from the romney campaign. >> you have folks that work at the jeep plant who have been calling their employers worried, asking, is it true? are our jobs being shipped to china? the reason they make these calls is because governor romney is running an ad that says so. except it's not true. everybody knows it's not true. >> and anne, in addition to not being truce, you see people in ohio taking it as cynical. they make people believe it's bad and horrible and somebody in china is about to take your job. >> that's the real risk for governor romney in running an ad like this, although obviously he had his reasons for doing so. the campaign obviously seeing ohio as does everyone as being it is lynchpin to be elected. anything he could do, if there are voters who are all right feeling skeptical of the auto bailout who might buy this, that's who this is

lost a big factor. we used to build suburbans and tahoes for gm. we used to say as gm goes, so goes janesville. we lost our plant. a lot of my friends from high school thought they could make a living for their families, they lost that. that livelihood is gone. i have a buddy that went from $25 an hour down to $9 an hour without benefits. we have got to help these people who are stuck in between, who are in the middle of their earning years when they are supposed to be building for their family, saving for their family, putting themselves on the path of pursuing their version of happiness, making the american dream realized for themselves and their kids. we have 46 job-training programs coming out of washington, spread across seven agencies. it is nothing but bureaucracy. the bureaucrats of the way, give people the ability to take this and get people the skills they need so they can get the jobs they want in the 21st century and have themselves back on the path to prosperity.
